Artist Statement

I have always felt that joy is the primary ingredient in the making of art. I feel that my paintings exhibit a sense of vitality and energy that demonstrates the spirit and enthusiasm of their making, inviting the viewer to share in that joy.

The strength of the paintings lies in their pictorial simplicity. Black calligraphic lines command the canvas with clarity and definition. Bold, linear and gestural forms echo the crisp linear movement of a shadow on its surface, rather like a drawing imprinted in nature.

There is a dialogue between positive and negative space in my work; between fluid, linear forms and the atmosphere surrounding them. The work is rhythmic and lyrical with a language that suggests figure, shadow, light, energy and organic forms. Ultimately, however, they challenge the viewer to bring his or her own personal and individual meaning.
